Freediving Basics and Successful First Dive

Hello, this is Leo, an instructor at VONFREEDIVE. As the crisp autumn weather sets in, bringing cool breezes in the morning and evening, we began our first freediving session with a new sense of challenge in the water. In this initial lesson, we focused on basic breathing techniques and equalizing, and it was inspiring to watch the students gradually build their confidence, with some successfully reaching a depth of 7 meters. Let me take you through this first dive session under the clear autumn skies.


Freediving Basics: The First Step in Freediving

This session was the first of a three-part course, and we held it at Sujak Korea, which offers an underwater filming studio and diving education facilities with 3m and 7m pools. During this session, we covered the basic theories of freediving, breathing techniques, and equalizing, and had the students apply what they learned in practice.


Introduction to Freediving: First Steps

We started by discussing the fundamental concepts and philosophy of freediving. Since most of the students were new to the sport, I emphasized that freediving is not just about diving deep, but about achieving mental peace and harmony with the water. This naturally piqued the students' interest and drew them into the process.



Breathing Techniques: Finding Stability in the Water

Breathing is one of the most important aspects of safe freediving. We began by learning diaphragmatic breathing techniques at the surface, which help to relax both body and mind. By engaging the diaphragm, taking deep breaths, and slowly exhaling, the students learned to release tension and gradually reduce their fear of the water.

Though the students were initially a bit tense, repeated practice of breathing techniques helped them find their calm in the water. Eventually, their fear began to subside, and they transitioned into a more relaxed state.


 


Equalizing: Balancing Pressure in the Ears

Another critical skill in freediving is equalizing. The students learned how to balance the pressure in their ears while underwater. We practiced basic equalizing techniques, such as the Valsalva maneuver, and during practical sessions, the students worked on relieving ear pressure while diving.

In the 3m pool, some found it challenging to adapt to the changing pressure, but with repeated practice, everyone successfully adjusted. I was especially impressed by their ability to stay calm and focused when equalizing, even when faced with increasing pressure.




A Student's Progress: Overcoming Fear and Achieving 7m Dive

One student, in particular, started with considerable anxiety about being in the water. However, through steady practice of breathing and equalizing techniques, they built the confidence to attempt a 7m dive. As they became more comfortable, their diving posture improved, and they ultimately succeeded in reaching the 7m depth. Other students also gained confidence and found comfort in the water as the session progressed.


First Day’s Achievements and Looking Forward to the Next Sessions

Through this first session, the students overcame their initial fear of the water and laid a solid foundation in freediving basics. The progress they made with breathing techniques and equalizing was remarkable, and the highlight of the day was when one student successfully reached the 7m depth. It was a day filled with new challenges and accomplishments, all under the crisp autumn sky. I look forward to our next two sessions, where we will aim for deeper and safer dives, continually advancing in skill.
